Day 3 - Thr 26-Jan-2006
Work! But I escaped early and headed to Utrecht to pick up the 17:43 ICE train to Koln. The ICE is a quality train with nice low voltage lighting, and comfortable seats.
My seat is one row back from the back of the train, looking through a smoked glass window into (what would be if the train was going the other way) the drivers cabin, so I can see the Netherlands disappear in front of me! In two hours I could be in Koln, then it's just a question of finding my hotel! It was cold in the Netherlands, and I think it's going to be colder still in Germany.
At the first German station a number of German border guards came on board to do a spot check - and I was targeted. My passport was checked and my bag examined. So much for open borders and Shengen!
Got to Koln on time, and found the tourist information place, where I got a map for 20c and walked through the main shopping streets to get to my hotel. It was 20:00 by the time I checked in, my room was small, but clean, and very neat. Early to bed ready for tomorrow!
