Day 9 - Sun 21 Oct 07
Up at 06:00 to see the boat into port, but we're still miles out so back to bed. I had the entire cabin to myself last night which was nice. Got up again at 07:00, and this time we're much closer in.
Somehow I'm one of the first into passport control and customs with no issues. I change €40 into 69 Dinar. I was planning to take the train into town, but a taxi driver nabbed me. He started out at 16Dn and I got him down to 8Dn. He dropped me off at the train station, and from there I walked into town.
The posh hotel in the centre of the median wanted 150Dn, which was a bit rich for my blood, so I headed back out to a hotel I'd spotted on my walk in. I meet up with a couple of people that I'd been chatting to on the boat, we checked out a few hotels together. The prices were much more reasonable, but there was no space.
Time was getting on, and I want to do other things than just look for a hotel so I headed to the big hotel on the edge of the medina and walked in. I got a huge room for 100Dn and they take credit cards, so I can worry about it later. Dumped my stuff and headed out to Carthage. Trouble is there's a massive thunderstorm going on. Walking down to the train station gets me soaked. A 0.75Dn ticket gets me a return ticket to Carthage on a rather battered old train.
Carthage itself is a series of archeological sights spread out over a few kilometers. I did a few, including the museum at the top of the hill while the rain was coming down. I think this is the same storm that hit Palermo yesterday!
On the way back to the station I spot a supermarket so I stock up on a few items. While checking the map I spot that there's a station right behind the supermarket. Perfect!
Took a walk around the medina in the afternoon, but it was mostly all shut up except for a few stalls selling tourist rubbish. So it appears that Sunday is a non working day in Tunisia. My room in the Tunis Palace is 101.
