Day 27 - Tue 27 Apr 2004
Train
Not that much sleep last night - the train seemed to be traveling at great speed on a dead straight track with enumerable level crossings. Got up to get off the train at Omaha in the early morning, saw the old station building and down town - boy was it cold!
Breakfast was interesting, one woman talked my ear off, and I was stuck by the window, so I couldn't escape. The restaurant car conductor knew exactly what was going on, and kept smiling at my position!
The train was only a half hour late into Chicago - there's a bit of slack built into the timetable! Managed to exchange my train ticket, and get a $15 refund. Anyway, checked my bag in at left luggage and got outside and went looking for the Sears tower. Walked over a bridge that MUST have been used in 'The Negotiator'. Paid $10 to get to the 103 floor of the Sear Tower - the tallest office block in the world (there is another taller tower, but the top bit doesn't have any floors on it). Took a shed load of photos, and then headed back to the station - saw quite a few people from the Zypher. Ended up in the first class lounge with free soft drinks, but no food.
While I was at the top of the tower I gave the Boston B&B a call and left a message saying that I'd be arriving tomorrow. I may be able to get off at Back Bay station instead of going all the way into Boston Central.
Right, I'm on the train now. I have a "twin" room to myself. The upper bunk slides down, and I have my own personal toilet and TV screen. However there is trouble, we only just pulled out of the station and we've lost power. I can hear the Diesel up front, but there's only battery power in the carriages. I bet we'll be back in Chicago station soon!
Well - the train did start again, and in the right direction and I've just had a lovely supper with a very nice couple returning from a trade show in Las Vagas.
