Trans Mongolian
You can book all this stuff yourself (if you have the time) but it's so much easier to use an agent. I used Monkey Shrine based in Hong Kong/Beijing, and cannot rate them highly enough.
Bring a metal mug and a spoon.
A gas box key (one of the triangular ones) will allow you to open and lock your compartment door.
Bring a few packet noodles with you.
At the Russian border fill in BOTH customs forms with exactly the same details, they keep one, you take the other and present it when you leave.
Try the platform food, it really is very good.
Check that your compartment doesn't have any boxes left in it by the Mongolian traders.
