The highlight of my trip to Hungary was Budapest. I camped on the outskirts of the city near a small airport.
I saw the castle district with great views over the city and the parliament building. I tried to get in to see an Opera, but all the good seats had been sold - so I ended up in Pizza hut instead - from the Sublime to the ridiculous!
Twelve years after my first visit I found myself in Budapest again on my 'Silk Road' tour on the way back from Beijing. I had a couple of days to spend in the city, and the weather was far better then when I visited last. I managed to re-visit a number of sights I'd seen before, but I must admit that little of Buda, or Pest really rang any bells. Mind you, my last visit was a long time ago.
The highlight of my 2008 visit was the guided tour inside the parliament building that sits right next to the Danube, and that has more than a passing resemblance to the Palace of Westminster in London. If you get the chance do the tour, and if you're an EU citizen, and can prove it with a passport or ID card, then the tour is free!
Budapest is a very pretty city, and it's easy to get around on foot.
