Wellington is a very pleasant capital city - I just wish I could have spent a bit more time there, but I was on a round the world trip and couldn't.
I arrived in Wellington on a great form of transport - a boat. I'd taken the inter island ferry from Picton on the south island. The crossing was relatively smooth but the weather in Wellington was very cloudy and overcast which was very surprising seems I'd left Picton in bright sunshine.
I found my hotel, quickly checked in, and dumped my bag, and then went out to explore, trouble was by that time the sun had set and it was getting dark quickly. I managed to see the harbour area in day light, but by the time I'd walked up the Parliament building (nicknamed the Beehive by the locals) it had got properly dark.
On my way back I stumbled on the Cable Car almost by accident, you either have to know about it, or have eagle eyes to spot the tiny sign. A few NZ dollars got me a return ticket. From the top you get a great view of Wellington, and I can only imagine what it must be like in day light!
All too soon my bed was calling to me, and I had a 09:00 flight the next day to get me to Auckland and my flight to Tahiti.
