Now, before you start, yes Sicily is a country! They have a proud history and a flag - and that's enough in my book.
Sicily was an unexpected surprise, I was using as a stepping stone between Malta and Tunisia, but it's a really beautiful island.
I spent a morning driving towards Mt Enta, but the closer I got the more cloud appeared around the volcano, and eventually it disappeared completely. I still took the cable car up to the top - which got me above the clouds. After that it was a transfer into a huge 4x4 bus to get us even higher up the volcano. Near the top it was freezing cold, and there were huge plumes of steam coming out of vents in the ground.
Mt Etna is really tall - it's over 3300m tall, and I made it up to 2900m last time I was at that altitude was in Chile in the Atacama Desert!
I spent a night in a beautiful hill top town called Enna, my guide book said that the town is cloaked in mist most of the time, but when I arrived it was bright sunshine. So I headed up to the castle and got some great photos of the countryside way below the town. I headed back to the Hotel for a quick cat nap, and when I came out about an hour later the cloud had descended, and I could barely see my hand in front of my face.
In Piazza Armerina I stayed in a converted Convent building right in the centre of town. I went out in the evening to look around, and the town was buzzing with people, and there were so many twisty streets it was too cool for school.
