Day 2 - Fri 16 Jul 09
Up at 08:00 for breakfast and ate as much as we could, the helpful man behind reception said he'd print out the ferry times for us, we jumped at the chance, but didn't realise that it was going to take a half an hour to do so.
The weather is poor, with it raining and limited visibility, so we're going to collect the hire car And head off in search of some better weather.
Spend quite some time looking around the industrial estate looking for the Sixt car hire place, asked at the Avis place, but they hadn't heard of then, after another half an hour gave up and went and hired from Avis - the car (an Alto) is poor, and every panel has a scratch or dent!
Nip back into town and collect our shopping from the supermarket, before heading out. Got a bit lost, and ended up heading back into town, before finding route 10 over the mountains avoiding the toll tunnel. Decided to take a side trip up a tiny road to the top of a Mountain (Somfel) , but the weather closed in and we could not see much.
The scenery here is amazing, and unlike anywhere else I've been. We visit a number of different places, usually at the end of the road at the ocean edge!
Tjornuvik has a little beach and some views over two sea stacks over in the distance. The weather has turned out better than expected and the sun is out!
Tourists are very well catered for with free, clean toilets at most tourist stops
Next came Eiði , Gjógv, Funningur, Elduvík and Oyndarfjørður before heading down to the bottom of Eysturoy to a place called Nes
The drive back was through a lot of rain, and we didn't get back to Torshavn until gone 21:00. Dumped the car outside the hostel, and headed out into town. The old part is very nice, tiny wooden buildings with grass roofs, and twisty turny lanes. Ended up on a pub for a very expensive beer, but got to use their wireless and booked a sight seeing tour to see the bird cliffs at 10:00 tomorrow.
On the way back got some chips, and because he was closing the guy threw in three free sausages! The one and only bargain in the islands!
The roads here are all very good, but the further off the beaten track you get the thinner they become!
