Day 4 Mon 23 June 2003
Walked down to the church hacked out of rock (looks like a bond baddies lair). Then took a tram down to the 'temporary' wooden cathedral. Then down to the harbour, to see the 'Carnival Miracle' cruise boat being built!
Helsinki has a number of free bikes that you can use to get around the city - trouble is there are never any bikes in the bike racks. Walked up thr' Eira and the Art Deco buildings, saw the Mikael Agricola Cathedral, and carried up through the Tahtitoriykatu park which gives great views of the city.
Saw someone cleaning the 'Battered Bull', a large private yacht, in the harbour. So I asked him how much a boat like this would set me back - a cool $28 million - phew!
Kept on walking via the market square up to the Upensky cathedral (a big Russian job, with onion domes and all!) - then rushed all the way down town, to the Modern Art museum, just to find out that it's shut on Monday!
Then back to the hotel to pack, and catch the bus back to the airport. Another long queue, including an Irish athletic team. The flight was okay, and made it back home ready for work tomorrow!
