Day 4 - Fri 27-Jan-2006
A late start, down to breakfast for 9am, and then a walk back to the railway station to buy my return ticket to Brussels on Sunday. Then it was back to the Tourist Information place to see what there is to see.
I'm going to do the city coach tour at 11am to get my bearings, and that gives me just enough time to walk around the Cathedral to see the Rhine. Cripes it is cold, I'm glad of my big coat and hat. I walked back and found the bus stop and did the tour which took me over to the other side of the river and to the Koln City Museum. The tour took about two hours, and after a spot of lunch it was off to the Cathedral to climb the tower
My two Euros got me the chance to walk up about 500 steps in a stone spiral staircase. There was a stopping off point to visit the bell tower - with one big bell!
Up more steps to a huge room high in the tower - where there was a set of metal zig zag steps going even higher. I got to the top of those, but then gave up (I'm not that good at heights!). Down all the steps, and into the Cathedral proper. I got to see the casket that holds the remains of the three wise men.
After that it was a walk up to see the old Roman gate of the city, and part of the Roman Wall. Then I walked to the St. Gereon church a well preserved Roman style church. Then it was back to my hotel, for a quick rest and then back out after dark to get some photos of the Cathedral. Phew! Tomorrow I'm aiming to get to Bonn.
