Day 2 - Sat 13 Nov 04
New York is noisy! Out on the streets by 8am, and headed up to Grand Central Station & took some photos, but before that I had breakfast in a Diner just across the road. Bacon, scrambled eggs, tea, toast and OJ. After that it was a walk past the Chrysler Building, and onward to the UN building - it doesn't open until 10am, so spent a half hour just wandering around. A few blocks down from the UN Building I saw a dry cleaners called "UN Piece Cleaners" Groan!
It really is quite cold, and the wind coming off the river does bite. The UN tour was good and I got to see all the chambers. After that I headed back past Central Station to the New York Public Library, so I could send a few e-mails. "The Day After Tomorrow" used the building, but didn't actually film here. The Internet terminals are in room 315 where they burnt the books to keep warm. A very impressive room it is too, with a fabulous painted ceiling.
After that it was a stroll up 5th Avenue where I popped in St. Patrick's Cathedral, then onwards up to Central Park, and finally the "Met". Wow - it was mobbed, so I used the toilets and decided to come back later. I've heard that evenings are a good bet.
Walked over to 7th Avenue, and headed down to Times Square - I was warned not to expect too much, and I'm glad I was, it's nothing special!
Eventually I got back to my Hotel, 8 hours on my feet and a about 100 blocks! Ouch - my feet!
