Day 1 - Fri 11 Apr 2003 Home to Toronto
Got my friend to drive me down to Heathrow, arrived there at midday, so had three and a half hours to kill before my flight, so tried to find a quiet spot to have a sleep!
I managed to get my favourite seat, internal aisle close to the bulkhead, but that irritated the family of four who wanted to sit together - Oh well! I don't think they are holding it against me! The five year old sitting next to me fell asleep straight way, and didn't even bat an eyelid during take off! However the baby in front of me screamed all the way through take off. The Captain has just been on, and said that he's expecting a smooth ride - Good!
Well, managed to survive the flight, and caught the bus (which I'd booked via the Internet) into town. Got to my B&B, and it was shut - with a note to call the number, and they'd come and open up. No change, and the payphones don't take credit cards. Eventually a shop broke my $10 note! The number just rang, and rang, and then went to an answering machine telling me that it was full, and I couldn't leave a message! Went back and left my own message on the door!!
Walked back down town, and booked into the Fairmont Royal York opposite the railway station. C$209 for one night, but this is a hotel with "an umbrella in every room" class!!
Nipped across the road and collected my train ticket, and C$40 from the ATM. Even the Queen has stayed at this hotel. Got to bed at 03:30 UK time! Oh, the room rate on the back of the door for my room is C$449!!
