Day 9 - Sat 10 Apr 2004
Singapore/Hong Kong
A year ago today I was setting off to Toronto on my first around the world trip! Had a quick breakfast at the hotel, and then packed up all my stuff, checked out, and caught a taxi to the airport. I got through check-in, immigration and security in 37 minutes. That was quick!
I asked, but there's no chance of an upgrade - the flight is supposed to be two thirds full. Got some water and chocolate from the airport shops, and sat down in the bamboo garden to eat it.
Singapore Air knocks spots off all other Star Alliance carriers - more space, more choice of films, they even have a games system built into the seat.
According to the screen it's 3hrs and 8 min to go until we get to Hong Kong.
Just watched 'Lost in Translation' a story about a love that can't be. The screen now says it's only 1hr and 10mins to go - that means I'll be on the ground at 17:00 (15 mins ahead of schedule)
The noise canceling headphones do work, but they do have a tendency to slip out of my ears - but when in they cut about 90% of the noise, a worthwhile purchase.
Another flight over - the new Hong Kong airport is impressive. I had to wait a bit for my luggage (first on last off). Caught the express train down to Hong Kong island, and the Underground up to North Point. Found my hotel after a bit of a detour
HK is very different from Singapore - it's a bit brasher, a bit dirtier.
The hotel is right on a street market, wandered out to have a look around, and to see if I could pick up something for breakfast tomorrow morning. My room is quite big, the best room of my travels so far, but then again it's the most expensive.
