Day 17 - Sun 18 Apr 2004
Takayama/Matsumoto, Japan
Up early to have a look around the Farmers Market, I was the only tourist - but I managed to resist the temptation to buy anything. Back to the hotel to collect my bag, and then to the railway station to put it in a locker. Spent the rest of the morning wandering around, taking photos, and waiting for the bus.
Checked my e-mails at the tourist office, got chatting to german girl who had been in Japan for the last 9 weeks, but was having some personal problems - I didn't enquire!
Right, I'm on the bus just outside Takayama, and I can see hills in the distance with snow on them! There are Poly tunnels everywhere here - I wonder what they grow?
The bus trip to Matsumoto was cool, got to see a lot of the Japanese Alps! Arrived in Matsumoto just around the corner from the JR station. Found my Ryoken with no problems this time! Checked the scale, and looked for landmarks as I went. My room is basic by okay, but there is no laundry, so I'm stuffed in that respect. Walked back down town to the tourist office, and got a bunch of info about what to do.
The weather is supposed to be rainy tomorrow afternoon, so I'm going to do the castle and the tourist bits in the morning, and the boring stuff like booking train seats and clothes washing in the afternoon.
Matsumoto is much bigger than Takayama, and is much like most other Japanese cities, except that it's surrounded my mountains.
