Day 23 - Fri 23 Apr 2004
San Francisco
Had a walk around Union Square and tried to find the Amtrak bus stop that I'll need in a few days to get Emeryville to catch my train. I found it was just around the corner from my hotel, and quite a way from Union Square!
Popped into Virgin Megastore and got a couple of CD's, dropped them off at the hotel, and then walked down to the Financial district - tried to get into the Pyramid building, but the observation deck is closed at the moment. The security guard did tell me which tall buildings are open to the public - and which ones have the best views.
So headed back to Union Square, and the Hyatt hotel. The bar on the 36th floor does have a great view - sat down, ordered an Orange Juice and just took in the view.
Took a tram down towards the Coit tower, walked up a *very* steep street, and then loads of steps to get to the base of the tower - then a very rickety lift ride. But the views from the top where well worth the effort.
Walked down to Fishermans Wharf to catch the boat over to Alcatraz. Took a guided tour up to the main block, and a audio guide of the cell blocks. It's very similar to Robben Island in South Africa. After the tour had a wander around the island, and got some great shots of the bridge and the city. Took the 7pm ferry back to the city, and then a tram back up town.
Did a bunch of washing ready for the train trip - my room looks like a chinese laundry!
The TV tells me that Denver just got 5 inches of snow - I wonder if that is going to effect my train?
