Day 11 - Wed 26 Mar 08
Up rather late today, breakfast at the place where we had lunch yesterday, mainly due to the fact that Phil had spotted sausages on the menu. Then it was a walk over to the local park and a climb up the hill to see the mini pagoda's at the top. Great views over the town from the top - the weather has cleared up so much since yesterday. Back down to the main street to sit down, have a drink, and do some tourist watching. A drink turned into lunch. The place has an expresso machine but when it first kicked off I thought it was someone hawking up - a very common sound in China.
We decided to visit the Dragon Caves that we saw on our bike trip yesterday, and the hotel arrange a taxi to get us out there. Admission seemed rather steep at 68Y but it dropped to 48Y after our driver had a word. The caves are just like every other cave system I've ever seen, with various formations that have been given name supposing to describe what they are. The only one I saw was the outline of a cat.
The only bit of excitement at the caves was at the start. We had been told to wait for our 'guide', and because there were too many people in the caves. Phil and I just stood at the edges of the first cave in the gloom. The guard didn't see us, and thought that we'd already gone into the caves, and went running in after us. His pal jumped when he realised that we were still at the start of the caves. Many laughs when the guard returned.
Taxi back to the hotel and then a walk down to the bus station and stepped directly onto a bus back to Guilin.
One and a half hours later I woke up just as the bus was pulling up outside the train station. Nipped back to the hotel that we stayed at to get something to eat and kill some time before the overnight train.
Alison was doing her usual leapfrog game, Phil and I were travelling overland by train, and Alison would take the plane and meet up with us in a couple of days.
