Day 73 - Tue 27 May 08
The train arrived on time at 06:00, if there was one train that I wouldn't have minded being late it was this one, as I can't appear at the hostel until 08:30. So I kick around the station. I try to buy my next ticket, but the sales desk doesn't open until 08:00. I find a book shop and purchase a Sudoku book, and that kills the time quite nicely.
The sleeper costs 200r for a couchette or 270r for first class. I change $150 into 330r and spend 270 instantly! That's about 60 quid. I walk slowly over to the hostel and ring the bell at just after 08:30! The door is opened and I'm shown to my room, what's more I can grab breakfast at 09:00 - Result! I have a quick show and then present myself for breakfast. Bread, cheese and pancakes.
Then it's off to see town. Walk down to see the Palace of the Parliament or as it's called by the locals the 'Palace of the People', but you can only visit as part of a group, then I realise that I've left my cash back at the hostel. So I reserve a spot on the 13:00 tour and then head off to see what else there is to see and try to exchange the $30 I've found in my wallet.
The 'Palace of the People' tour is interesting, the rooms are huge and there are fab views from the balcony at the front down a tree lined boulevard. However the Palace appears to be falling apart already.
I was bitten by some insects in Sofia, and my arm has swelled up quite nicely, so I managed to obtain some cream which may bring it under control. Most of my Romanian cash is now gone, and I still have to pay for my room!
The walk back through the old town was pleasant enough. Arrived at the hostel and was ready for bed!
Romanians don't smoke as much as Bulgarians, but they do park their cars on the pavements everywhere and at every angle.
