Why Syria? Well, I like the middle east and I was amazed to find that I could get a tourist visa to visit one of the "Axis of Evil" countries. Damascus is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, so that was a bit of a draw, and what sealed the deal was that I could come back to the UK overland on the train!
