Day 3 - Tue 11 April 06
Up for breakfast and checkout at 08:30, I left my bag behind reception and walked down to 6th and Market to pick up the Duck Tour, it is very touristy, but I do like seeing a city from the water. Trouble is that you can't see much of Philly from the Delaware river!
After that I walked back down to the Irish Monument which commemorates the influx due to the Potato Famine. If my great great great grandfather had made a different decision I'd be American.
Then it was back to the hotel to collect my bag, and a walk up to the main library (to check my e-mail) and book my hotel in El Paso. Then onwards to the Art Museum, and the steps that Sly ran up in the movie Rocky. A bit of a detour got me to the Amtrak station by 15:00 (the train departs at 16:00).
Philly station is big, but not as big as Grand Central in NY.
Caught the train with no issues, and as soon as the buffet car was open I was down there. Salad starter, Salmon main, and Cheesecake to finish - all that for $22. On my table was a lecturer from Charlottesville, and we talked about everything (but mainly travel - what else!)
Just passed through Washington DC, and saw the Jefferson Memorial (right by the track!) and the National Cathedral on the hill in the distance, and even Regan airport. It's a bit like seeing an old friend from a distance, and not being able to attract their attention.
It's now 19:00, and the sun is setting. The train arrived at Charlottesville at 21:00 (a bit late), off quickly and got a taxi to my hotel for $5. I'm now in a room that looks just like the one in "My Name is Earl"
