Day 9 - Mon 17 April 06
Another hot day, up at 07:30 and out to have a walk downtown before it gets too hot. There doesn't seem to be much of architectural merit. Back to the JFK sight for a few more photos and then to the visitors centre to use their Internet connection. I've booked a car for seven days for just over $100, if I entered that I was from the UK then the price went up to $395. Back to the hotel to get breakfast (croissant and tea), and to pack my bag. According to Amtrak the train is on time. I can see the station from my bedroom window, and every time I look out the window there's a freight train going past.
I headed up the Reunion Tower, a concrete tower with a geodesic dome on the top, normally $2, but because I'm staying at the Hyatt it's free! - The view is okay, but the only sight is Dealy Plaza. The weather on TV said that it hit 95 in Dallas yesterday.
It now seems that the train is running 40 minutes late. I've now booked a Sacramento to Grand Junction sleeper and a Chicago to Buffalo sleeper, but I know that I'm not going to have enough time to do all that I want to do.
The train was exactly 40mins late. The next stop was Fort Worth, and there was a long (3/4hr) stop, so I jumped off the train and managed to track down a corner shop where I managed to top up my mobile phone. Gosh it's hot out there. I've just seem my first (small) cactus by the side of the track!
Supper was pasta and cheesecake. I was going to get off the train a San Antonio, but it was gone 11pm by the time the train got in, and I was in bed so I decided to skip it.
