Day 16 - Mon 24 April 06
Watched the sun rise over Monument Valley from the comfort of my bed! After breakfast I was off on the tour of the valley. Our driver today was Henry a typical Navajo name! The tour "bus" was a pickup with some seats bolted into the back, and a framework with some plastic sheeting over it to keep the dust out. The trip was excellent, and a lot was done on private roads . What I didn't realise is that there are a number of natural arches in valley. Every rock formation was a name, some are obvious, others not quite so.
There was one woman on the tour who had to be first off the truck and would walk about 20 feet in front of everyone else, so that she could get a photo. Of course that meant that she got in the way of everyone else's photos!
Then it was back to the hotel to check out, and I got the ingredients for lunch from the supermarket next door, and then headed off to the Grand Canyon. I picked up a hitchhiker (Elison) at tonazea and dropped him off at Tuba city. He does the trip often and relies on hitching to do the trip.
I got to the South Rim of the canyon and took some photo's at various view points and then headed for the visitors centre, but because it was so crowded and hectic that I just headed out of the park. I was going to find someplace to stay nearby, and go back tomorrow, but I think I might just press on to Las Vegas. I found a motel in Williams on the old route 66 for the night. I guess it's another early start tomorrow!
