Day 17 - Tue 25 April 06
Awake quite early due to the noise in the next door room. Went to reception to check out and the guy who was watching television there when I checked in was in exactly the same place still watching. Had he been there all night? I've no clear idea what time it is due to the time zones - it's either 07:30 or 08:30. Some places observe daylight saving others don't.
It's a longish drive to the Hoover Dam, and I got a few photos of the dam, but there are a lot of road works taking place and getting a shot of the front is a lot trickier. You have to pass through a security checkout to get to the dam, mind you it's just a bloke looking into the back seat.
Then it was a short drag to Las Vegas, found the Bellagio with no problems but had to wait in line for 10 minutes to check in. The room is a fair size, but the window is so dirty that there is no chance of a photo. and there's a hair (don't ask what type) in the hand basin. I've filled in the comment form - let's see if it makes any difference. I actually smartened myself up and put on a shirt to check in, I need not have bothered.
The hotel lobby has a display of oversized flowers, and there are many people taking photos of it. A bit weird. Took a walk down the strip and saw the fake Paris, and the fake Venice. It comes with a fake Doge's Palace, Rialto Bridge and St. Marks - all with advertising hoarding all over them. The Gondolas sail on crystal blue waters, just like the Grand Canal - Hmm!
The roof in the Venetian is interesting, I saw it in daylight mode, I'll try to see it in night mode later.. Why doesn't Las Vegas try to produce some original architecture? Rather than copying stuff? My first impression of Vegas isn't good. Barbara did tell me that I'd hate Vegas, I guess she knows me well!
I'm now waiting for sunset, so I can see the "shows" outside the various casino's - oh and I put a dollar in a slot machine just so that I can say that I've gambled in Las Vegas. According to the Weather Channel they had snow in Denver yesterday - and I'm heading there soon!
The weirdest thing I've seen in Las Vegas? A Tesco's till receipt for bin liners just sitting there on the pavement on the strip.
