Day 6 Wed 22 Feb 2006
Breakfast at the hotel, then out on the streets. I rang the Kuwait embassy in Doha to check that I could get a visa at the airport. The gentlemen was very helpful, and assured me that I could.
They are building a fake souq here, it a bit like a hollywood wild west town - totally unlike the souq in Sana'a! Then it was back to the hotel to await collection for the Desert Safari.
The safari was fab! what the guy could do with a Toyota Land Cruiser has to be seen to be believed! At one point it was like doing the carousel at the Nurburgring! Some of the dunes we drove down (and up) must have been 50 metres. At one point we stopped at the top of a dune, and the driver pointed to the distance (across a stretch of water) and said it was Saudi Arabia. So I've seen Saudi Arabia, even if I haven't been there (yet!).
One board with me was a couple on a stop over (Jurgen & Hanifa), and a Japanese air stewardess (Kaori) with her parents (they come from Nara, which I visited back in '97). After a lot of screaming we ended up at a campsite and had a very nice meal just after sunset. It was a great day with some great people. The drive back through the desert in the dark was a lot of fun as well!
